Efteling. The largest theme park in The Netherlands and a wholehearted and true family day out. We had an absolute blast.
We had no plans at all to leave our holiday park last weekend but a random google told me that Efteling was a mere 40 minutes from where we were staying. I’d suggested it to a friend recently and they had had a great time. Considering that they used to practically live in Florida’s Disney World, I knew that they had higher than average standards, so we decided to just go for it.
Efteling more than delivered and compared to Disneyland Paris, it was cheap. Super cheap. Tickets were a mere €36.50 each for the three of us, and Joe was free. It has a fantastic pricing menu that includes early admission, lunch and snack packages. As well as a reduced rate if you buy online beforehand.
And we just loved it. Mainly because it has the biggest Fairy Tale Land. It’s hard to describe. They’re more exhibits than rides or experiences. And they speak in Dutch. Obviously. But our 4-year old was enthralled and couldn’t get enough of it. It’s all a bit European and dark. There’s no shiny, perfect, happy Disneyness at all. But that was a lot of the charm.
Each fairy tale had a short synopsis in 4 languages. Which was lucky because we hadn’t heard of a fair few of them. Mother Holle anyone?!
The food was hugely reasonably priced compared to what we’re used to in the UK. Lunch for the 4 of us; one adult and one child’s meal which was more than enough for us to share, came to €13.00. So even if you doubled it that’s way less than what you’d pay at Alton Towers or Chessington.
There were proper thrill rides, an awesome raven/horse/fire show and lots of ride along ones for our young children. There was the Efteling equivalent of Disney’s teacups and It’s a Small World, as well as a super playground on every corner. It was just perfect, and ideal for us.
And the best part? No worrying about losing our park map. The interactive app that I’d downloaded, in English no less, told us everything we needed to know at any given point in the day. Ingenious.
When you all go to The Netherlands, because I know you all will now (!) definitely make Efteling a day-trip destination. I promise you’ll love it!
